Sony Sony DPP-EX7 Digital photo printer for sale in Jacksonville, Florida

$65

Sony DPP-EX7 digital photo printer is the first equipped with an LCD touch screen large enough to permit editing sans computer. Doing so is quite easy, and the image quality is high, but on-screen editing capability is merely adequate.
The dark-gray color screen atop the squarish, pale-gray printer flips up and swivels 180 degrees. For travel, it folds over the Input Select, All/DPOF, and Print buttons, the Memory Stick, PC Card, PC, Paper, and Ribbon status lights, and the oblong well that stores the slim plastic stylus. On the front, just beneath the power button, are separate Memory Stick and PC Card slots, plus a removable paper tray. The ribbon cartridge slides in and locks in a side slot, protected by a closable door. The included USB cable and AC power adapter plug into the rear of the unit.
Like most dedicated photo printers, the DPP-EX7 uses dye sublimation technology for continuous-tone output. The printer has a 400- by 400-dpi resolution and uses a CMY ribbon with a clear protective plastic overlay. Sony makes three types of ribbon and six types of paper for stickers and borderless snapshots of different sizes (up to 4 by 6 inches). Each ribbon is coded to corresponding papers; a light indicates when the two are mismatched.
Setup takes only as long as unwrapping and installing the ribbon cassette and inserting the filled paper cassette. Memory Sticks from Sony's digital cameras are directly compatible with the printer, but any other type of memory card needs a PC Card adapter. Thumbnails of all images are automatically displayed on the 2.3- by 3.1-inch LCD screen, nine at a time. Although Sony advises using the stylus, pressing the touch screen with a finger works equally well.
Once you select an image, you can apply various effects by pressing Edit, Adjust, or Filter. Edit permits rotating, moving, and increasing the size of the image. Adjust controls brightness, saturation, tint, and sharpness levels. And Filter lets you transform your images into paintings, change color to sepia or monochrome, or revert to normal. Another series of options, under Creative Print, provides templates for making custom cards, calendars, stickers, and even contact sheets. You can input text directly on-screen and use tools for drawing, rubber stamping, and making cutouts. The various preference menus let you fine-tune color and choose whether the prints should have borders, time/date stamps, and glossy or textured surfaces. You can specify the number of prints and you can copy and save images or simply print preselected DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) frames. Once the output command is given, each print takes 1 minute 48 seconds to complete.
Attached via USB, the DPP-EX7 operates as a standard PC printer and works with all image-editing programs. Image quality is excellentequal to or better than that of minilab photographs. At 68 cents per 4- by 6-inch print, the cost is higher than for traditional photographs, but competitive with output from other photo printers. The DPP-EX7 is a great device for instant proofing if you don't have a computer, but its moderately high price tag diminishes its value if you plan to attach it to your PC.
